severe problems, please help

Hi,
i am experiencing severe problems for 2 days on
my pc, and suspecting a virus. problems are:
1. can't login to my web based mail(page not found).
this was the first encounter.
2. any web search/url selection, using keywords
like virus/norton/symantec...causes IE to close!
3. can't launch norton systemworks/antivirus/firewall apps. they show for
a second and close. even
their properties can't be displayed.
4. the same goes with any file within norton/symantec folders, even text
files.
5. it seems that my key strokes are watched. i tried
to add the word "virus" to this msg title, and
the save/ok/cancel dialog poped up, as if i escaped the msg.

using XP sp2, with live update, and an expired norton systemworks 2003
subscription (shame on me).

i don't know what to do, and where to start,
please help.

Download and run Stinger:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Don't forget to disable System Restore before running. See instructions on
website.

Try running the AV in safe mode. I dont know if you can either download some
antispyware or get a friend to download it if you can't. I dont know if they
will install in safe mode if you cant get them installed normally. Are your
antivirus definitions up to date. Some PC mags have CDs that have
antispyware programs which are a good source if you cant download any.
Something to try is system restore to see if you can go back to a time that
will let you install these apps if you have problems installing them. Update
them run them and see what shows up. The names of the malware will dictate
your next steps if any.

Since you had an obsolete NAV with an expired subscription, it is highly
probable that your computer is infected with some sort of malware.
Start by scanning in Safe Mode with either Sysclean or Dave Lipman's
Multi-AV:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#TrendMicros_Sysclean
http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm - how to use Dave Lipman's Multi-AV
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe - Multi-AV download

After you've done the initial scanning with one of those tools,
uninstall your old NAV and get a full-featured av, install it, update
it, and do a thorough scan in Safe Mode. Then continue your cleanup by
scanning for non-viral malware per:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Get all tools/updates/programs from a different, known-clean computer
with an Internet connection and a cd burner (or have a usb thumbdrive
with enough capacity to transfer the files). If this necessary work
seems daunting (and there is no shame in admitting that), take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local version
of BigStoreUSA).

had the same problem it was a browser hijacker/redirector. I believe I cured
the problem with Spybot seach and destroy.. It basically takes any website
antivirus related and redirects it to page not found.

.......
thx,
sysclean contains 2 links for download, the 1st (sysclean.com)
succeeded, but the 2nd(updated pattern files) failed, IE closes
immediately after clicking the link.
i'm beginning to think that a professional help is needed here.
the virus prevents me from accessing links.
btw, in safe mode i was able to do a full scan with the AV.

You'll have to use someone else's system to download it.

To be safe, rename the file and run it from a floppy disk in your system.

Hi, I have also similar issues; I could not login, so with the help of
Microsoft tech, I typed at the run box, sfc (space) scannow, it help me fix
some issues with the internet explorer. Or you can try, safe mode with
network, by restart you computer and strike F8 key. Them, go to www.
trendmicro.com for free virus, spyware scan.
You can also try: go to google and type sysclean, and download at your
desktop, and then download the patch, and save also at the desktop. Them go
to www.ewido.net and download the anti-malware, save in your desktop, and
scan in safe mode with network. Remember, you can't download in safe mode,
just scan the AntiVirus, 2-3 times and them scan with ewido.
If you fix your problem, but it keep coming back, maybe still some virus, or
trojan in your machine, and then, you'll need to do a clean reinstallation.

Regard's,
Christine
