Set-up locks up during install

I am trying to install Windows XP Professional and during
the process of installing the windows files, it locks up.
At the bottom left of the screen, it says it is
installing devices. The keyboard, mouse, etc. are all
locked up and all I can do is use the reset button to
restart the machine. Windows setup returns to the place
it left off and locks up again.

Any ideas of how to get around the device that is causing
the problem?

Physically disconnect all peripheral hardware devices
from your computer, except for the mouse and keyboard.
