Service Pack 2 Killed Network Connectivity

After installing Service Pack 2 on my computer, I was no
longer able to connect to the university's network for
internet access, outlook express, or any of my mapped
network drives. I've tried everything I can think of,
including uninstalling service pack 2 entirely, but
nothing has worked. Anybody know what I can do to fix
that?

Try reinstalling your NIC's drivers if you connect wired. If you are
connecting wirelessly, 1) make sure you have updated wireless drivers;
2) if using a third-party wireless connector make sure you check on the
mftr.'s website to see if it needs to be updated or let Windows manage
the wireless; 3) do you need to have a proxy set to connect to the
school's network? If yes, then check with their IT Dept. regarding any
settings and/or security settings that need to be changed; 4) make sure
the Windows Firewall isn't blocking the network.

Thanks for the quick response. My situation is as follows:

1)I connect wired.
2)N/A
3)No proxy is required.
4)I have since uninstalled sp2 and disabled the remaining
windows xp firewall service for the connection, but am
still utterly lacking in network connectivity.

I have uninstalled the NIC and its drivers completely and
reinstalled. The drivers are current.

Hello Malke,

When you plugged the cable in do you see two/one little light turn on? I too
live on campus and they thought that when I installed SP2 that I had a virus
so they turned my port off and I had to get them to turn it back on. If you
do see lights, you can open up command prompt and type ipconfig /relase and
then ipconfig /renew, see if that does it. If you had a static IP address
to begin with you might have to set that up again. This should show you how
to do that

Another option is to try resetting the Winsock settings. SP2 has an new
Netsh command which can reset the Winsock settings to factory defaults. Type
"netsh winsock reset catalog" in Command Prompt.
