service pack 2 install fails

Hi. I just did a clean install of windows xp; (it's been over two years and
things were starting to bog down). I booted to my xp cd, started setup,
deleted the partition and created a primary partition of 20g with the intent
of using the remainder of the drive as an extended partion where I could
create a logical drive for data and another for a shadow copy.

All went well until I tried to install sp2. Windows Update did a bunch of
critical updates first and then downloaded sp2 but shortly into the
installation, I received this error:

Service pack 2 setup error. Failed to install catalog files.

I used system restore to go back before the failed install. I tried again
but had the same result. The system is up and running as perky as it was
when new but I'd really like to get sp2 in there. I searched with Google
and surprisingly came up with few relevant results.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Thank you, HG. In the meantime, I did another clean install of xp after
which, sp2 installed without a problem. But I'll hang on to this valuable
info.
