Service Pack 2 incompatibility with McAfee

Since installing SP2, I have been unable to communicate
with McAfee for .dat virus updates. I spent 4 hours
online with several McAfee techs and applied a half dozen
of their "canned" fixes. One fix was to fully delete the
McAfee VirusScan program and reinstall. When I tried to
download and reinstall VirusScan from the McAfee page the
IE browser froze and presented the typical error dialog
box. "We are sorry...etc.
McAfee swears the problem is with the IE ver 6 browser.
What do you'all think?

I use McAfee myself and had no problem with SP2. One thing many
people don't do, (and some disagree), is to disable your A/V when you
are ready to download anything, and turn it back on when the download
is complete. This has caused many problems, especially with IE & OE.
{If you ever noticed, when McAfee downloads an update, they disable
the A/V while doing it}.

I would suggest you remove SP2 as per the link below. If all is OK,
reinstall SP2 with the A/V off. Hopefully, that will fix it.

Follow the instructions here to remove SP2:

For what it's worth, I use McAfee 4.5.1 and have never disabled it for any
installation, not even (Win2K) service packs. This version at least never
causes a problem. When downloading un update, it has to shut down the
scanner temporarily in order to replace the .dat file, but that's a
special case.

I have McAfee Viruscan 9.0.10, Firewall Plus 6.0.6014, & Privacy Service
7.0.0.18, and they are all working fine now, but I have had a few sticky
problems with the various components. After a bit of fiddling around (&
self education) they had to be uninstalled a few times and reiinstalled.
McAfee are busy trying to fix several issues. You might want to read the
forums at http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/index.php for issues regarding their
products.
Issues are various and seem to vary from person to person, but are being
addressed.
They include..an annoying pop-up when sending mail if your server requires
authentication.
Limited users getting update reminders, (should only be the primary user)
and getting pop-ups "Some McAfee components are missing please reinstall".
Privacy Service "Block Ads" feature blocking javascript etc. etc.
