service.exe bad image application or dll C:\windows\system32\umpnp

I have a client that when the PC is turned on it comes up to the following
message:
service.exe bad image application or dll C:\windows\system32\umpnpmgr.dll is
not a valid windows image, please check against windows cd. Then it has ok.
When you press enter it goes to a black screen with the mouse curser and that
is it.
Any ideas on a fix for this other than reloading windows and losing
everything ?

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type (or paste in): SFC /SCANNOW

service.exe is no MS file I know of.
