Server to Server communication sucks in Windows 2000

G

George Hester

I have had this issue always. If the Advanced Server is in constant
communicatuion with the Server then communication holds up. But if there is
not constant communication the Server drops its contact with the Advanced
Server (the Domain Controller) after a little while. There are also
Clients- Professional both Windows 2000 and XP. And those never lose
communication with either the Domain Controller or the Server. When I say
Server I mean the generic Windows 2000 Server. But the communication from
Server to Domain Controller is constantly falling off. The Domain
Controller is in My Network Places on the Server with the DC's C drive as an
Admin share there. I have to select that share two or three times before
the System wakes up. It's irritating and I don't know if this is a common
issue in Windows 2000 seems so. Now the Server is at SP4 and the DC is at
SP3 maybe that's the issue?

Dave I just tried following this article at Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q135404/

Do you know what this does? It said to remove the File and Printer Sharing
and the Client for Networks from the the NIC which is not the dedicated
adapter. Well I did that and the result was these protocols and Services
were removed from ALL the NICs. I think it is normal given the setup I have
because I don't see anything that is NOT normal in the set up and I see ALOT
orf Knowledge Base articles and Service Pack updates to exactly what I am
experiencing.

George, there's a big difference between unbind and remove. Unbinding is
unchecking the service from a specific device. Removing removes the service
from the machine.

If I read the article correctly a three under "This symptom occurs if:" must
be true else the article does not apply.

I'll give one more example here of what is happening. When I boot the
Server all the clients and the domain controller appear in My Network Places
| Microsoft Windows Network | Domain. All of them. But after a little
while everything will disappear from there except the Server. I can log out
and back in and they are all back. Little bit later they are all gone but
the Server the machine this is taking place on. The DC and clients NEVER
exhibit this behavior. Never. Maybe this is an SP4 issue because that is
the only machine at that level. I don't know what else it could be???

Also if you have multiple adapters you can Right-click My Network Places,
Properties|Advanced|Advanced Settings|Adapters and Bindings, then in the
"Connections" box, you can set the desired bindings order according to your
situation.

OK thanks I will read through that stuff. I don't have the .NET Framwork
installed anywhere on the Network but I do have browstate in the Support
tools. I ran it browstat status and got Unable to retrieve server list from
MachineName (DC):1230. I opened that port on the Router but no change.
Nothing about the Server where this issue is occurring other than it is one
of the servers in the domain.

No idea since we don't know what you're doing with it or anything about the
network topography. You may want to ADD microsoft.public.win2000.networking

| Maybe I should just remove the other Nic and be done with that as a
suspect?

Well I removed the extra NIC. It turns out it was a LSA card which in my
experience should not really be used in Windows 2000. When I received this
system it came with that as its NIC. Anyway I removed it. The result of
doing that wasn't pretty but I got things back to normal. I also changed
the Mode of the PCI NIC from Automatic to Full Duplex Mode. Douing that
again lost the Domain Computers but they came back relatively quickly. So
I'm going to see how this goes.

I really don't think it is a Network issue. If it were the other system on
the Network ought to experience the same loss in communication and that does
not happen. This issue is strictly on one machine none other.

If this doesn't work then a reinstall may be neccessary. We'll see how it
turns out but again in the meantime I'll be inspecting thos articles you
provided Dave and am going to start with a clean Event Viewer.
