Server error: write error on file...

G

Guest

Hi, I made some changes to my Frontpage 2002 site (I'm on Office XP). It uses
Shared Borders (top.htm, left.htm, and bottom.htm).

I got the following message when I tried to publish the changed pages:

Server error: write error on file ".bottom.htm.tmp".

Then I right-clicked on just the homepage (index.htm) and tried to "Publish
selected file(s)" and got the following error message:

Server error: write error on file ".index.htm.tmp".

I've done "Detect and Repair" but it doesn't fix the problem.

Any help would be VERY appreciated!!!

Thanks.

Check how much space you have used in your hosting package. This
error is an indication that you have insufficient for publishing
(which requires extra space over the size of the file being
published).

Wow, that never would have occurred to me! I'll check and see whether that's
the problem. Thanks a lot!

The question is, how can I publish the changes successfully when the error
messages stop the publishing process?

Thanks.

Thanks SO much - you nailed it! I deleted a bunch of files off the server and
now I'm able to publish. I REALLY appreciate your help!

I am getting the same write error on picture files.
Server Error: Write error on file ".....jpg.tmp"
My website is on Roadrunner so I do not have access to permissions.
Anyway, I have a 5 meg website and supposedly have 15 meg of space. The RR
admin site says I have only used up 65% of my space. As I publish just
changes I get an error on one picture file, if I republish the whole website
I get the error on a different picture file. I am getting the runaround from
RR help line. In searching the MSN site I found 3 possible fixes:
1) I do not have enough space on my website or on the server
2) the permissions do not let me write
3) there is a broken file somewhere

Can anyone help me track down my problem?
How do I know if a file is broken if the filename keeps changing? I have
deleted 5 pictures completely and it just comes up with a new "write error on
file".
Someone mentioned importing my pictures, if I am just linking to the picture
how do I import it?

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Momscout

I downloaded and used FP Cleaner and still get the "server error". Is there
anything else that could be broken?

Thanks for answering,

If you are using an image you had on your hardrive you need to Import the
file into your website first, then use it in your design (File | Import
File).

Not sure what you mean by; "...I am just linking to the picture" ... does
the image file exist within your web site or is it a link to an external
image file?

It is possible the hard disc on the server is short of space, or your
account has been changed (or corrupted) to have less space than you
think there is. Have you checked with your host?

Note that the maths are wrong somewhere - 5MB is only 33% of 15MB, 65%
of 15MB is nearer 10MB.
Is your estimate of 5MB based on file sizes or used disc space? - in
Windows NTFS a 1KB file will occupy 4KB of disc space. On Unix a
folder occupies at least 4K of space (at least on the servers I have
used), whereas Windows says a folder occupies 0 Bytes.

Ronx,

The RR webpage site claims I have 64.?% used. The website on line is
an old one that probably was that big with lots of pictures. Since I thought
the problem might be size I have since reduced my file size to less than 5MB.
So, I am trying to replace the 10MB website with a 5MB website and cannot
get beyond the Server Error. How can I figure out how big my website will be
(besides just looking at filesize)?

Thanks for helping,
Momscout

Rob,

The picture files (*.jpg) are located in the web directory. I used the
IMPORT function per your instructions and FP said the files were already in
it. I went ahead and imported anyway. I then tried to publish and still got
the Server Error.

Thanks,
Momscout

In Windows Explorer, browse to the folder that holds your web site.
Right click on the folder and choose Properties.
The Properties will show the number of files and folders in the site,
plus total file size, plus total size on disc.

The size on disc is the space the files take up.

Most control panels are accurate, so if it says you have used 64% of the
space, then about 10MB has been used.
If the site has FrontPage extensions, open it directly in FrontPage and
see if there are any files that should not be there, and delete them.
Also run Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks.

When you publish, FP should delete anything on the server that does not
exist on your local site *before* attempting to upload any files. If
you have FrontPage 2003 then open Remote Site View. Change the dropdown
at the top left to Files in Conflict. This will show a list of files in
conflict AND unmatched files in the right column. The unmatched files
are those on the server, but not in your local website.

Ronx,

Thanks for the help. I still can't publish. I only have Frontpage
2000. I don't have access to the webserver to view. That is where I am
trying to work with RR and it has been 6 days and I still do not have the web
server technician (just being routed around customer service). My files say
I am using 4.7 MB but the properties per your instructions say I am using 6.7
MB. That is real helpful because I have hit my limit before and did not know
why. I am going out of town until Sunday so I will work on this again then.

Thanks for all your help,
Momscout

Thank you to everyone that helped, it is fixed. I finally got help from Time
Warner help line. They couldn't figure out what was broken. We checked
space and privileges. It was up to finding a messed up file when I just
decided to delete the original published web site and just reload. The
reload worked just fine. I still think they did something to break it but it
is fixed now.

Thanks again, I couldn't have fixed it without your knowledge and help,
Momscout
