Server 2003 with XP pro client

I'm a computer programmer that whats to start screw around with some
networking. I currently have a system running Server 2003 and I want it to
function as an application/file server to (for now) one windows xp pro
machine. I have a Linksys DI-604 broadband ethernet router and all the
ethernet cable I could ever hope for. Also, I currently only have dial-up
in my area but will hopefully be getting DSL within the next two months
(fingers crossed). As mentioned I'm not so good with the networking stuff
and am very new to it. I figure once I get them up and running I can learn
with them but I don't even know where to start. What I am looking for is
for somebody to run me through how to get the basics set up either through
posts, tutorials, books, anything that would be good for a beginner. I know
some basics about networking but wouldn't mind a fresh start. Especially
using Server 2003.

Thanks

Whether you get DSL or not, buy an inexpensive broadband router. It will act
as your DHCP server. Plug the Server and the Workstation into LAN ports on
the router. Set both computers up to obtain IP Address automatically. Turn
on the router, wait 2 minutes and boot the computers. If the lights come on,
you should be able to share something on each computer and within a few
minutes those shares should show up in "My Network Places". For more
in-depth info, Google for "windows workgroups", "Windows file sharing" an
such. There is vast knowledge out there. You can take it as far as you want.
Also check out books that are geared toward passing the "network +"
certification from CompTIA. Knowledge of TCP/IP is crucial if you plan on
doing any serious networking, and especially for troubleshooting.
