Serious startup problems

whenever i startup my computer I get a screen saying that
startup failed and a whole lot of choices to startup in
either "save mode (with prompt/network etc" to "restore
latest version" or "normal windows XP startup". When I
use "normal windows XP startup" I get the XP logo before
going back to the screen with all the startup options, if
I choose any of the other startup options my screen goes
black with only a dot blinking in the top left corner.
What is wrong and what can I do about it????

I'm not too sure about your problem. Try rebooting Windows XP into safe
mode. If it doesn't boot into safe mode your Windows XP operating system is
corrupted and needs to be reinstall or repaired by via the Windows XP cd you
got.
