serial number

I think I mistyped my serial number or something like it,
cause I installed windows XP pro with an authentic serial
number. (not illegal version) I've installed other
programs and alike. Then Windows asked for an update
(service pack or something?) wich I tried to download
when I got informed that I was running under a false
serial number. How can I retype my serial number without
having to reinstall everything (which wasn't easy for me).

Thanks in advance

When you activate windows Xp it should allow you to enter the proper windows
key so that the SP will work.

I had the same issue the first time i redid my dell, thier generic key
(image) would not work, but it allowed me to type in the one on my case
sticker to activate

Greetings --

If you had "mis-typed" the Product Key, the installation would not
have continued. (The odds of accidentally typing in a correct Key are
nearly astronomical.)

Are you trying to install Service Pack 1 and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and use a legitimate full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've been
defrauded.
