I can recieve e-mail from anyone on my contact list, but when it comes to
sending e-mail I only have a proble sending to aol, I get an error message:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject '', Account:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.Bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '550 relaying mail to aol.com is not allowed', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

What is confusing to me is that your Internet connection is from
Charter, yet you are using Bellsouth for your mail servers.
In general, one can only use the port 25 SMTP server belonging
to the outfit which is providing your Internet connection at that moment.

And Gary's clever discovery is why the OP can't send to AOL. AOL refuses
relayed mail. I'm surprised he's able to send to anyone. Maybe the OP is
out of town and the hotel's Internet connection is borked. I stayed at
an Embassy Suites once that had set up things wrong and couldn't send
POP mail at all.

Check out the following from MSDN: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924235
Cannot send mail to AOL, Qwest, Hotmail, Earthlink, etc
SYMPTOMS
All mailflow to the internet works except to domains such as AOL.com,
Qwest.net, Mindspring, Earthlink and Hotmail.

Messages sit in the outbound SMTP queue and eventually time out with a
destination unreachable NDR.

CAUSE
Some mail servers (such as AOL) require you to create a valid PTR (or
reverse DNS lookup) record that points the sending server's IP address to the
local SMTP domain namespace. Sometimes they require it to match to the actual
FQDN of their SMTP Virtual Server on Exchange (typically the MX record).

RESOLUTION
Create a valid PTR or reverse lookup record on your companies
external/internet DNS server.

Of course this fix will be required to be done by your ISP unless you run
your own mail server.

It is extremely unlikely that a company as large as Bellsouth
would not have the DNS set up properly for their mail server.
