Sending message count when no messages in out box

Outlook 2003 has started to display it’s sending x number of messages when
there are no messages in the out box. The number of messages it displays is
indexed every time I close outlook with unsent messages in the out box (real
messages). At the same time I have had two other things happen. It now takes
10 minutes or more to send a message even though I have my option set to send
immediately. And about ever 4th time I open outlook I get a message box
saying outlook was shut down improperly and it must verify my personal
folder.

I think one bad thing happened to cause all three problems, Anyone have any
thoughts?

This worked, and cleared up the problem for a couple of days. Then it
reappeared.
I was able to clear it up again, but now I am looking for the underling
problem. What is causing this, and is there something I can do to resolve it?

You should turn off sending read receipts. You should find that in Tools >
Options somewhere. I'm not using Outlook 2003 here at work so I can't tell
you exactly where the option is.
