Selling Windows XP 64

Carey Frisch [MVP]

OEM versions of Windows XP, which include the 64-bit version,
cannot be resold as the license is non-transferable to a different
computer once it is installed and activated on the original computer.

| Hey,
|
| I found out that my $1000 video editing suite won't run correctly on the 64
| bit XP, so I'm reinstalling with 32 bit XP Pro.
|
| If I sell my copy of 64 bit XP Pro, will the buyer have any issues
| registering that OS for their use? Do I need to do any kind of de-activation
| or de-registering?
|
| Thanks,

Windows XP 64-bit version is only available and sold as an OEM version.

Your likely EULA reads:

The SOFTWARE is licensed with the COMPUTER as a single
integrated product and may only be used with the COMPUTER. If
the SOFTWARE is not accompanied by HARDWARE, you may not use
the SOFTWARE. You may permanently transfer all of your rights
under this EULA only as part of a permanent sale or transfer
of the COMPUTER, provided you retain no copies, if you
transfer the SOFTWARE (including all component parts, the
media, any upgrades, this EULA and the Certificate of
Authenticity), and the recipient agrees to the terms of this
EULA.

That copy of XP is OEM. You can transfer it with the PC it was first
installed on. According to the EULA you agreed to, it can't be sold or
transferred any other way.

You would have to sell the entire computer you originally
installed the Windows XP 64-bit version on, along with
the original license. You cannot use this license on any
other computer other than the one you first installed it on.

| So... If I sell the OS I have to sell it with hardware of some kind?
|
| What if I want to use my x64 later on another system of my own?

The OEM you purchase was tied to the first computer you installed it on,
it can not be moved to any other computer according to the licensing
agreement.

That means you can not bundle with for sale with anything other than the
first PC you installed it on - the entire PC.

You can not move the x64 version to another PC, according to the
licensing agreement.

You are open to trying anything you want, but it may not abide by the
licensing agreement. Users may not be able to properly register it.

Or you could just tell Micro$oft to **** off. Once you pay your money, you
own the right to use the software.

You don't "Own" anything. You have a license to use the software
according to the license agreement. Been that way for a LONG time bubba.
