Seems MS is coming out with an updated version of sp2 around sept29

Like so many others here i have had numerous problems installing sp2 on my
dell deminsion 8200
I just got off the phone with dell with an atapi issue i had with my cd rom
drive and Dell just told me they have had hundreds of calls from owners who
installed sp2 with a million problems.

Seems they talked to Microsoft and they told them they also have had
hundreds of phone calls. The tech told me to uninstall sp2 (which i did by
doing a system restore) and wait till MS comes out with the later version.
which is suppose to come out around Sept 29th. sp2 broke something in my
sony cdrw drive and now dell is sending me a new one because i am still on a
service contract.

So if any of you haven't installed it yet maybe you should wait till MS gets
some of the bugs out and reissues it around Sept 29

Total BS, no rework of Service Pack 2 is planned. You just dealt
with another Outsourced/Inexperienced Corporate Drone, reading
from a script and trying desperately to mark your case as closed.
If you accepted that answer, you should know you were lied to.

I don't think SP2 can brake hardware. I installed SP2 on
my Dell P4 with no problems at all and it didn't break
any hardware.

well you can believe what you want but this came from a level 11 person
also i talked to someone at MS and he also told me there was a revision in
the works
I am going to take their words and wait till Oct before i reinstall sp2

If a revised or updated version of SP2 was in the works, there would be beta
testing going on now...and there isn't.

We *may* see updates or patches on the second Tuesday of October, however.

Also, Internal operations within Microsoft are notorious for ending up
on technology websites. Generally, I look though 4-5 daily, and there
is no mention of any kind of re-worked Service Pack 2. Think of it in
this light - Service Pack 2 is several weeks old, as of yet there isn't a
single "Show-Stopper" bug associated with it. Just exactly what kind
of rework would Microsoft be doing to it ? Also OEM's are now in
the process of building/shipping SP2 based systems. So if the original
Poster has valid data, I would assume Dell isn't going to start SP2
machines until October ?

Oh well now I'm totally convinced! ;-)

Seriously the chance of any CSR being right about the
future corporate plans of any company has historically
been just about the same as random chance.

And all the CD's that have been sent out will be recalled at the same time.
Sounds to me like the big bug that was to hit us when 1999 went into 2000,
remember all that?

SP2 doesn't break anything. If you have followed the instructions,
prominently posted on the MS web site, you should have no problem with the
upgrade.

Also, I didn't think you could uninstall SP2 by doing a restore. It took
out restore points when I put it on my XP Pro box...and I seem to read
something about using the add/remove if you have to eliminate it....

Yes you can remove it by using system restore as one option. Below is a
link describing ways to remove SP2. A restore point, in fact a very
large one, is created at the beginning of the restore process.

IIRC Restore Points are only deleted if the machine has insufficient memory
to both (1) download/install SP2 and (2) retain existing Restore Points.
YMMV.
