Billy E. Karlinsey

I at a lost on how to gain access back to my computer . When I click on any
applications program they fail to open . Tried to use system restore, I get
the same message wanting a file association to run the program. Even on my
other good computer going to Folder options to check file associations for a
clue is no help. .exe is not listed under extensions nor is applications
listed under File Types. This all started when the system seem to not
responding so I did a manual turn off thinking the reboot would fix
everything

Hi Wes
Information seems good the down side it did not work. I got the file "EXE
File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files" with my
other good computer install on a floppy disk able to copy to desk top, but
cannot get the file to run.
I have found that a right click on any .exe file fails to show the OPEN or
Run as... command selections. Have tried a restore and the restore seem to
work as some of my desk top items disappeared, but still having the same
problem with any exe file.
Tried various was to do an SFC /SCANNOW in the Run command will not run.
have any other ideas? At this point I miss have a boot disk like Windows98
SE where at the A: prompt go to C: ;then going to a require exe file and run
it. If I did get a good registry restore what else could it be.

Billy,

Rename Regedit.exe to Regedit.com and then import the extracted REG file. Or, fix the association manually:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/exefile.htm

Or, try this from Command Prompt (command.com, not cmd.exe)

RUNAS /USER:Administrator c:\windows\regedit.exe

Type the Administrator password when prompted.

Hi Billy,

Is your system clean from spyware, etc or is this a side-effect from the
before mentioned? Either way and in the meantime, you need to be able to
access regedit.exe to go any further. Run the script on line: 275, first:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Once done, run:

EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: "Save" the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

If you are still having issues, it would seem that you are either running a
beta version of SP2, you are still infected and/or your merge versus
edit/run commands are not correct.

More info needed, but good luck in the meantime! Keep us posted.

Hi All
I tried the script on line 275 did not help. I can not run REGEDIT.EXE or REGEDIT.COM also a couple of other files that I'm not familiar with REGEDT32.EXE and REGINI.EXE.
Tried to run the RUN command (START) for all the above files with the proper paths. when clicking O.K. got this window: Windows cannot open this file, FILE:XXX, to open this file, windows need to know what program created it. Windows can go on line to look up automatically, or you can manually Select from a list of programs on your computer. Some time this would work but not on the REGEDIT files. Would get this message some of the times: The application failed to initialize properly (0X0150004) Click on OK to terminate the application.I use method to get the command window so I could run SFC /SCANNOW. In the command mode then CDing to proper folder I was able to run an EXE file. The program is call CONFIGSAFE and program like Windows restore but much more so I return to an earlier setting, But not luck with fixing the problem. At this point after running McAfee virus scan with no problems found and same with Ad-Ware SE. What is know now any EXE file I left double click on does not run the file. A right Click does not show the OPEN or the Run as.. also trying to open Internet Explorer does not work if using the help and support and click on a link, Internet Explorer will open, that I find peculiar. Going to Start-Control Panel-Add or Remove Programs will not open. I was trying to get to it to run the repair on Internet Explorer. I have exhausted my scant knowledge. How to gain access to the repair for Internet Explorer I would think is my basic problem. I did install Service Pack 2 (WindowsXP Home), I have the CD form Microsoft would reinstalling that again might fix my problems?
