File association gone for ".exe"

When I started my computer last evening, I got a message
about it successfully recovering the registry
(surprising, because I hadn't made any installs or other
changes in months)

When it came up, Many things were bad - including the
loss of the association for file type ".exe"! It tells
me that I need to identify the file that created it!

For some reason, I can double-click on IE and "My
Computer" and they start up, but not Outlook Express, or
any other .exe or .lnk (shortcut) file types.

Dave,

In the System Tools use the System restore to restore your computer to an
earlier date that should fix your problem. You won't loose any documents but
you may have to reinstall any applications that were installed since the
restore point.

I agree about using System Restore to hopefully take care of this
situation. As additional information, Kelly has an .exe fix at line 16
and there is also a link at line 25 which will take you to a page on
repairing associations.

Thank you both. System Restore took care of it, and I
found a fix to a nagging problem I had been having with
shortcuts while I was at it (through http://www.kellys-
