I have repeatedly been getting a notification that a security update
(KB920872) is available. Several times I performed the update and each time
it reported that the update had sucessfully completed. Next thing I know,
the system is telling me that updates are available for installation (I had
option set to automatically sownload and notify me when updates are
available).
I tried express install and also manual install all with the same results.
It did not prompt for a restart when done but I did that too including
shutdown and pulling the plug for 30 seconds (sometimes stuff gets kept in
memory even with the power shut off due to standby power...). No change.
The aparent fix was to reset the download updates to the 'recommended' auto
install mode. This did the download again and then rebooted the machine (it
asked me first). After reboot, the volume control icon was missing from the
task bar. A second reboot restored the missing icon and all seems well now.
