Security Centre Icon Gone After Upgrading Symantec

Dave Walsh

Hello,

We were recently having troubles after installing SP2. Here's the deal:

*We had SP2 installed.
* We installed Symantec Security Client, which includes Antivirus Corporate
Edition 8.1 and their Firewall.
* We installed both, but disabled the Firewall cause we don't need it.
* The Security Centre kept telling us that it found an Antivirus program but
that it's status was unknown.
* I went to the Symantec site. It told me that this was fixed in an update
for 9.0.
* I downloaded 9.0. Still didn't fix the problem. I installed the update
and it fixed the problem.
* However, when it booted up, there was a message that Symantec has detected
the Windows firewall and that it wasn't needed because of the Symantec
firewall.
* We want to use the Windows Firewall (thanks Symantec for making up my mind
for me).
* However, the Security Centre icon is gone from the task bar. I can still
get to it from the Control Panel/Security Centre. There I changed the
firewall back to Windows.

MY PROBLEM:
I can't seem to get the task bar icon back. Anyone else have this problem?
Can it be fixed?

TIA,

Dave

That's normal.

It only appears in the System Tray area (right next to the clock on the
taskbar) if Security Centre detects a problem. Since Norton has told it
that 1) you have and up-to-date virus scanner and 2) you are using a
firewall (be it Windows or Norton's), everything is OK and the icon won't
appear there. (The third item that Security Centre checks for is that you
have automatic updates of Windows turned on.)
