Security Center says Norton ON, but it is not on system...

Howdy,

My XP Security Center tells me that I have "Norton Internet Worm Protection"
turned ON, but I have removed every trace of every Norton or Symantec
software from the system (with the detailed guidance of their Tech Support
folks.) There are no such services, no folders, and no instances anywhere in
the Registry. Despite all that, I get the message in Security Center. It
appears after a "clean boot" and after a "Repair" from the installation CD.

Short of as Format & Re-Install, might there be a way to kill this thing?

Sincere thanks,

Kenneth

How about changing the anit-vius to unmonitored in the security centre,
then rebooting, then turning it back on (then rebooting maybe). are
there any traces of norton in the add/remove programmes?

Flamer.

Symantec has on there website a removal tool,
that when ran, will uninstall any traces of there
antivirus applications on your computer. Then after
doing that, try rebooting and check the security center
for any changes.

Howdy,

I have tried that, but with no luck...

And, no, there are no traces of Norton, or Symantec in Add/Remove (or
anywhere else on the system.

Sincere thanks,
Kenneth

Hi Roger,

There are actually three such "removal tools" and I have run them all more
than once. They do not correct the problem.

Then, earlier today, I had a Live Chat with Symantec "Technicians" and asked
that the matter be escalated. Eventually, I was put on a link that allowed
one of their more senior folks to take control of my system. He checked
everything I had done, and declared the matter closed even though the problem
had not been resolved. As we might expect, he said that with every trace of
Symantec and Norton having been removed, the solution could only come from
Microsoft.

Thanks for your comments,
Kenneth

Try downloadind and then installing
Microsofts "Windows Live Onecare" package,
(antivirus, firewall ,spyware) It's free to try for a period of
time and works great ! Then see if you still have the Symantec
remnants left in the security center.

Hi Roger,

I might give that a try, but would need to know more...

Do you have specific reasons to believe that "OneCare" would solve my
problem? If so, can you please describe them?

Thanks as before,
Kenneth

Even though you may think you're 100% Norton free, I'd offer one
more suggestion. If Security Center detects NIS Worm protection
then something is still loading/running associated with NIS. Likely it
is a service or Non-Plug and Play driver. Have you scanned through
the Services in HK Local Machine, System, CurrentControl Set for
any "Recognizable" NIS components. **It is likely the load path
will not contain Symantec or Norton but load from \System32 in the
Windows tree ? Because of this, a search for those strings wouldn't
return a match and won't be easy to locate/remove from the Registry.

Howdy,

I had looked in there for "Norton" and "Symantec" but for nothing else.

That folder has a ton of entries. Might you tell me more about the sort of
thing I should look for?

I will also add that a fellow from Symantec took control of the system
yesterday and looked over the registry for quite a while (including the
folder you suggest) to no avail.

Sincere thanks,
Kenneth

Pardon me for jumping in but I experienced much the same problem a few years
ago with a Symantec program as well as Lotus 123. I finally, on the
recommendation of someone in the group, obtained RegCleaner and ran it. It
managed to clear up the problem. A Google will probably reveal a source for
RegCleaner.

Of course this may not solve your problem and I recognize that many here,
rightfully so, frown on the use of any registry cleaner but it might be
worth a try.

Also, SpyBot Search and Destroy has a tool under Tools/System Internals that
might help also.

Good luck.

Hello Kenneth. The reasoning behind my suggestion
is that nowhere in your thread did you say if you re-installed any other
antivirus software onced you noticed your situation in the security center.
Once new antivirus is installed , you should'nt see any thing else
in security center other than your currently running software. I once
had the same situation as you and installed different antivirus
software(LiveOneCare)and now that's what i see when exploring
security center.

Hi Roger,

Indeed I did not mention that I have Kaspersky AV installed on the system.
But the problem I am having is not with the AV listing. I see the "Norton
Internet Worm Protection" listing under Firewall.

I will add that if I turn Windows Firewall ON the listing changes to tell me
that I have two firewalls running, and that such settings can cause problems.

Thanks for any further thoughts,

Kenneth

Hi Again,

I neglected to mention that somewhere along the way, someone guided me
through a way to display "Non P&P Drivers" in Device Manager to see if that
was the source of the difficulty. We found none. With regret, I cannot
remember more of the details of that particular effort.

Thanks again,
Kenneth

Hi Jack,

It is no "Jump In." I welcome your suggestion, but...

I have run three different registry cleaners to no avail.

All the best,
