security alert

We have been getting an icon at the lower right side of the screen that first
flashes an x and then a ?. It then balloons and says, "SYSTEM ALERT" system
has too many spyware applications, blah, blah, blah. If you click on the
balloon it brings up the internet. virprotect.com and wants you to spend
$49.95 to get rid of the problem.

We were told by our internet provider to download windows defender, which we
did. we are still getting that pop-up and your defender told us that we were
problem free. any suggestions?

Hello soccermom,

The first thing to try would be updating Windows Defender and your
antivirus application, to be sure you are current, then restarting Windows in
safe mode--then scan the whole machine in safe mode with both your antivirus,
and Windows Defender.

In safe mode, some of the protective services which these programs use to
ensure that they aren't removed, are not running, so they are easier to
remºve.

Try Engle's suggestions first, but due to the fact that the Zlob Trojan
infector changes so rapidly (as recently as Jan. 11, 2008), not many
general purpose Anti-Spyware programs are going to keep up with that
activity level. You can take a look here for specialized removal
techniques which atempt to do just that:
