searching for items message in my computer

I click on "my computer or windows explorer and it shows
the flashlight searching for items. It never stops and
the drives never appear. This has been going on since
upgrading to winxp. The drives are there when accessed
via command line and all programs work. What do I do to
get my icons to show up?
