Search Utility: Does Not Permit Renaming

J

J. Danniel

Hi. I have Windows XP Home (an OEM version that came with my Dell
computer).

I have a question about the Search feature.

The Search feature doesn't permit renaming of files within it, it
seems. When I use the search feature to find a set of files with a
specific word or phrase in it, and I try to rename one or more of
them, nothing happens.

Is there a way to get the search feature to permit renaming within it?
If so, what's the procedure? If not, will the search feature in
Vista permit this?

Do I have to use a third-party search feature that permits renaming,
rather than the one built into Windows XP?

Thank you.

Are you selecting the "file" and not a shortcut? Select a file, r-click
the file name and pick Rename.

To the best of my knowledge, I'm not selecting any shortcuts of any
kind.

I am opening up a folder, and then I'm pressing the F3 key. This
brings up the Search function on the left hand side of the Explorer
screen.

I type in the phrase, select Search Subfolders, and a list of files
comes up.

There are a few files I want to rename. I select one, press the F2
key (which is the same as right-clicking and selecting Rename), and
proceed to rename the file.

But it doesn't work.

That method works fine here. You say "it doesn't work", what response do
you get? Is this happening in every folder? If you don't use "search"
but navigate to the file that you found and rename does that work?
