'search' replacement?

Is there a replacement program for 'search' (right click context menu)?
I'm used to W2K which searches MUCH faster than XP.
Would prefer a program which does not build a database (like the old
Win98 style).

Thanks
Vic

You can turn on Classic Search(old 98 style) in XP :

Method-1.
Open TweakUi
Go to Explorer section(left side) and tick "Use Classic Search in Explorer" (right side)

Method-2.
Open Registry Editor
Go to :[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState]
Create a new value named "Use Search Asst" and set its value to "no"
Restart Explorer.exe

I do not think the Windows 98 "Find" uses a database. It is really just
Windows 95 with Active desktop. Other than that it is the same as Windows
95. You can use Windows 98's in XP if you want. Just copy the executable
winfile.exe from Windows 98 into System32 folder in XP. Then Start | Run |
winfile | OK | select folder | File | Search... will be fast. Yes I can't
stand XP's Search either. dumb.

Hi George,

Thanks for your reply. I tried winfile as it was easy to do, got an
error message however (COMMCTRL.DLL could not be found). Put
commctrl.dll from Win98 into system32 dir. but still no joy (error
message).

Any ideas what my be going on with Xp baulking at winfile (a 16 bit
program!)?
TIA

OK, I just tried running WINFILE in Win98 and found that file is an OLD
version of 'file manager'!

Anybody know what program or DLL is invoked when Win98 'file find' is
launched?

Let me see. It might be that the Common Controls (commctrl.dll) is vastly
different in XP. It is actually but no winfile is a 32-bit application.
Try this. Take and put winfile.exe and put it in a folder all its own.
Then take commctrl.dll out of Windows 98 but preferably Windows 2000 and put
that in the same folder. You will only have those two files in there. Then
go into that folder in the command prompt and type winfile and hit ENTER.
Tell me what happens. Hold on a sec I can try it...ok here is what you can
do.

Find a Windows 2000 machine and take the file comctl32.dll and put it in the
folder with winfile.exe just those two files in that folder. If Windows 98
has that dll use that but it may not I think there was a change from that
file between Win 98 and Win 2000. In any case you will get what you want
with comctl32.dll. If you don't have comctl32.dll then use the commctl.dll
from Windows 98. They are both 32 bit applications only there is more
(better) controls in comctl32.dll then in commctl.dll.
