Search not working in XP

I'm pulling my hair out on this one!

I have XP with the latest patches installed. I want to search a subfolder
for files that contain a given string in it (g_varCRDSNName is the word).
Whenever I run the search, it returns no results, even though I know that in
the subfolders there should be hits (I got the word from a document in the
subfolder tree). I have set up Search to use "Index files with unknown
extensions". Still, no hits. What am I missing?

Probably an obvious thought here but you are aware that the index and deep
searching facility works properly only on an NTFS format - aren't you?

...works properly only on an NTFS format

....which my drive is, but thank you for your input.

Thanks for the info. A co-worker of mine just gave me the link and I
installed it. Still, I want my OS to operate as advertised.

It's working as designed. XP's search feature will only look for text
strings in specific registered file types. See this article for
information and how to register an extension so search looks in those files.

Using the "A word or phrase in the file" search criterion may not work
