search indexer just.. will.. not.. STOP

A

Argh!

It keeps popping up in my process list after I manually end it.

Yes, I've disabled it with services.msc and no, it won't STAY disabled.

And no, there's no "Windows Search" or similar entry in the Add/Remove list
-- or the Installer Clean Up utility or anywhere else on the HD that I can
find -- in order to uninstall it.

I'm sure someone will ask me WHY I would even want it gone, so let me head u
off. First, it's a resource hog -- it sits there, does nothing for me, yet
eats up, on average, 25MB of memory. Second, I never use it. Third, because
of reasons 1 & 2, it annoys me that it refuses to stay down.

So, the $64,000 is... how do I get RID of this blasted thing once and for
all, w/o getting rid of (or reinstalling) XP (SP3) in the process?

TIA

Hello:

Are you referring to the "Windows Desktop Search"? This seems to be a hot
topic ... check out this link, about 1/4 the way down the page is the
uninstall process from the Windows Desktop Search Admin Guide.

I read through that thread, all of it, and the various, specific
recommendations didn't help in my particular situation. Files and registry
entries called for simply were not there, so I couldn't remove or alter them
as instructed.

I ended up manually deleting the registry entries with "Windows Desktop
Search", "wds" and "search index" in them. That did the trick. It's gone
now. So far, after multiple reboots and running programs normally, no
adverse affects have been noted.
