Does search work in this discussion group? I type the word "password" and I
get no hits? I can see at least 3 posts with "password" in their title.
What is the secret to searching on Microsoft.com

The web interface to these groups seems to have been broken. There have been
numerous posts about this over the last week or so. No, there is nothing
you can do - it's Microsoft's interface and it's pretty awful.

For searching, use Google Groups Advanced Search and constrain your search
to this newsgroup (microsoft.public.windowsxp.general) and the time frame
you want.

For a better newsgroup experience, set up a newsreader instead (very easy to
do). Here's information about that:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn
to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you
can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are some links to
information about newsgroups:

You should check the posts in a group before making a new one. This has
been asked/answered numerous times in the last couple of weeks.

Use Google Groups Advanced search. This newsgroup is
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

Stop using the clunky/unreliable/crap web interface to access these
newsgroups and get a proper newsreader.

You'll be much happier for it.

Also - when you want to search for archived posts - use Google Groups
instead of the clunky/unreliable/crap web interface that you are now using.

The web interface for these newsgroups does not seem to get much
attention/updates - nor should it. Not when most people would be better off
just setting up Outlook Express (or some actual freeware newsreader) to view
and post onto these groups as well as utilize the much better
organized/easier to understand Google Groups to search for past postings.

Although you will need to learn to be more specific with your searches:

First, note that this is a newsgroup, not a discussion group. You are using
Microsoft's terrible web interface to particpate in this newsgroup, and it's
the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there is. Do yourself a
favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with
Windows. See http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

For searching newsgroups, but not participating in them, the best tool is
Googlegroups advanced search at http://groups.google.com/advanced_search
