Seach Facility Won't Launch

I have Windows XP Professional. When I try to seach for
a file (Start/Search/For Files and Folders), Windows
never launches Search. Nothing happens. Task manager
shows that no new application or process was started.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any ideas on how I
fix this?
