Scrolling, Dragging & "inactive" window.

I have a couple of strange behaviours which started some time ago.

1.When scrolling down a page, using the wheel on my mouse, or, when dragging
a
(minimised) window, or, in Outlook Express Newsgroups, the "collapsing
process" of a thread, the movement is very, very jerky.

Dragging minimised windows or collapsing of threads used to be smooth.

I accessed Tools==> Internet Options==> Advanced==>Uncheck "Use smooth
scrolling", but this does not make any difference.

2.The working window of my computer frequently becomes "inactive", this
happens for example during typing (spreadsheet, notepad, m/s word, entering
password etc.). Although I hit the keys on my keyboard the typing does not
appear on the screen. I have to mouse-click on to the window to make it
"active" again and to proceed with typing.

I am a "safe hexer", and use frequently (religiosly) updated scanning tools:
Ad-Aware v106r1, a-squared v1.5.6, BitDefender 8, Ewido Security Suite v3.5,
Spybot S&D v1.4, SpywareDoctor v3.8, SUPERAntiSpyWare v3.1.0, WindowsDefender
(Beta2), and also have SpyWareBlaster v3.5.1 and HOSTS Secure MVPS Hosts
files. My Internet Zone is set according for additional security according to
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm . I also use 1/4ly the Multi
AV scanning tools in http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm . I use ZoneAlarm
FireWall (free version) and eTrust ezAntivirus v7.0.8.1.

Grateful for any constructive advise to overcome these doings.

Hi Kayman! I was wondering if you ever fixed your inactive window problem.
I have been experiencing this problem for the past two weeks and, as you
know, it's getting quite annoying! I'm not sure how it happened in the first
place and now I can't seem to find any help on fixing this problem. Please
let me know if you were able to find a solution. Thanks!

Hey Adrianna,
yeah, this was a tricky one...I am not an expert but am happy to pass on
what worked for me. I consulted some specialized forums but at the end had
to take my pc to an technician. My problem was solved after my AGP driver
was updated and performed a scan with RegistryMechanic which 'fixed' some
important issues. (In hindsight I think I could've solved this issue
myself).
Tell me, when you 'drag' (move by mouse) a 'restored-down' window does the
movement appear to be wave-like (jerky)? If so, then the problem could be
associated with either your Windows - conflict with IRQ - (google "irq" for
more info) - , AGP driver and/or video card. If your video card is okay
then you may wish to update the AGP driver and perform a registry scan -
suggest RegistryMechanic (paid version..sorry :) ) .
Info:
Google for "agp driver" for info, tests and updates.
Have a look if one of the below mentioned applications are identifying your
video card (in my case only 'Everest' provided accurate information).

Everest - FREE
http://www.oldversion.com/download.php?idlong=b0e1140fe6e5a7bda6688b67229e3da2

Sandra Lite 2007 - FREE
http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/sandradl_e.html

Belarc Advisor - FREE
http://belarc.com/free_download.html

You also may wish to download Driver detective http://www.drivershq.com/
but only focus on the video driver, if other drivers are listed to be
updated get advice first - Once you know what you have, what next? Go get
the latest driver for your hardware/OS from the manufacturer's web page.
Specialized forums:
http://forums.viaarena.com/ , http://www.short-media.com/forum/index.php ,
You'll find a bunch of very helpful people there.
Driverguide may also provide you with good info
http://driverguide.com/

To summarize: check AGP driver and video card - update if required and do a
registry scan with a paid-version application ( the free ones usually don't
repair the *important* items).
Let me know how you're progressing.
Good luck and best wishes,
Kayman.

Hiya Kayman (or Fuzzy St. Jones?)! Thanks for replying back so quickly!
Anyways, I guess we didn't exactly have the same problem. Mine was just the
window going inactive on it's own making it difficult to type an email or do
something on the net...having to stop and re-activate the window by clicking
on it so I could continue working. I don't think I'm experiencing a
wavy-like motion when I drag the window around (I'm actually doing it
now)...maybe a tiny bit jerky, but then again I have an Intel graphics chip
(that's a whole different problem because my video/graphics chip is now
incompatible to a lot of the 2006 PC games software they have out now).
Anyway, after endless searching around on the internet last night, I have
finally fixed my problem!! (so far, so good...I'm paranoid it's gonna happen
again) I found some other website forum that recommended going to
www.kellys-korner-xp.com to download the "Tweak UI Powertoy" (I think #66 on
kellys website?). The other support forum had said that maybe background
processes/applications were stealing the focus. After downloading and using
the Tweak UI, I don't seem to have the problem anymore. I'm sorry you had to
go to great lengths to fix your problem. I'm assuming you had more problems
going on other than an active window becoming inactive on it's own. Is your
computer okay now? Well, thanks again for replying and your suggestions
anyway. Take care!

Adrianna :)

Kayman

Hi Adrianna,
Well it's Kayman...I've got a couple of mischievous daughters, they know my
all time favorite cowboy hero "Lash LaRue" and his sidekick Fuzzy; you may
or probably may not recall the movie series.
I only found out of the name change when the post went in to cyberspace, a
bit embarrassing really.
I am glad that you got your problem under control but please do double check
on the "tiny bit jerky"
movement...it shouldn't be. It may be worthwhile looking at updating your
video card (do a restore
point prior updating...just in case).
I wouldn't say that I had more problems, but it took me some time getting
appropriate advice. Everything
is A1 OK now. But I will make note of kelly's website, just in case -
thanks.
With all good wishes,
Kayman (and not Fuzzy).

Hi Kayman! I don't think you should be embarrassed about the name
change...it's actually quite cute-sounding and I'm sure your daughters got a
kick out of it. Anyway, even though I had said that the movement was a tiny
bit jerky, I meant it in a pixely sort of way...but it looks no different
from the first day I used this computer. Thanks for the advice though...I've
been thinking about the video card change anyway because of the software
graphics incompatiblity issue I had previously mentioned. It blows my mind
that I already have to think about upgrades because my computer is only 9
months old. I guess I'll have to locate some other website forum on advice
with that...I don't know a whole lot on all this technical stuff. I'm glad
to hear that your computer is working great! Do keep in mind that kellys
website, as they have solutions for hundreds of windows xp computer issues.
Thanks for the response and advice! I wish you (and your computer) well!!
:)

Adrianna
