I posted yesterday about having screwed up my home
computer and was told to do a "Repair Install" of my Xp
Pro.
When I put my XP Upgrade CD (I had upgraded from Win 98)
in the drive, Repair Install was not an available option.
So I opted to to a plain upgrade (recommended).
About halfway through the process, I got a "Fatal Error
Message:
An error has occurred that prevents Setup from
continuing.
Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a
fatal error. The setup files should contain more
information.
Setup failed to remove . . . <then it listed the
following product catalogs:>
IEEXCET.cat
SP1.CAT
DXBDA.CAT
DXXP.CAT
WMPLAYER.CAT
DXXP.CAT
Error: the signature file for Windows XP Professional
Upgrade is invalid. The error code is 426.
The service has not been started."
Now, I'm stuck in an endless loop. Each time I reboot the
machine, it comes back to the point in the XP upgrade
where the process stopped. It does this even if the
upgrade CD is no longer in the drive.
So now the computer is totally inoperable.
What do I do now?
(I'm sending this from my office compuer.)
