screwed up hyperlinks

When I use the "broken hyperlinks" function and repair a bad link, instead of
fixing the hyperlink by inserting a relative path to the web, FP puts the
fully path to the file as it exists on my computer, ie
file:\\c:\website\bllah ... which of course creates a broken link at my site
when I publish it. Any ideas about how to prevent this from happening?

Make sure all your pages and images are w/i the FP web/site before using them or trying to repair the links

Yes, they are within the web. And Yes, my web is open.

I think I further identified the problem. I had a number of external
hyperlinks at my site pointing to another website. I added some pages to my
site making these external links unnecessary, so instead of having 20 links
to http://www.anothersite.com/page.htm

I tried to change them to, simply "page.htm " ... which is located within
my web (I made this change using the browse and replace feature in the Broken
Links function)

Well, apparently FP has decided that an external link changed to a local
link MUST HAVE THE FULL PATH, i.e. file:\\\c:\fulpathtosite\page.htm. Unless
I am overlooking something obvious, there is no other solution.

The big problem is that once links get located according to full path on the
hard drive, they no longer show up as bad links. I can publish the site to
the web and recalculate the links and fix the broken links on the web server
..... but I would much rather figure out what I'm doing wrong so I don't have
to jump through these hoops every time.

If the page is on your site, best to always open the page (from broken links) and correct the link to see the correct path to use
(then use that path for other links if all the other paths are at the same level in your site)
- apparently some how in your replace you entered an invalid path (above your root) so FP is treating it as a file based link
To find those links in the FP site use Edit Find and search for file:\\\ (all pages in html/code)
- open the pages and correct the relative link

The path is correct. This is a Front Page problem.

I am correcting the path from http://www.awebsite.com/thispage.htm

To simply thispage.htm

The file "thispage.htm" resides within my web. I locate it using the browse
feature and, yes, it is in my website directory.

I choose replace all ... and the paths to the link are changed to
file\\\c:\mywebsitedirectory\thispage.htm

Of course, I just want the path to the link to read "thispage.htm"

When I publish my website and use the broken hyperlink function, going
through the same process as above, the path to the link becomes
http://www.mywebsite.com/thispage.htm
instead of, simply, thispage.htm

At least the link works this way, since the full path on the link is
correct. But I would prefer for the path to the link to be simply be relatve
to the site. Apparently when you use the broken hyperlinks function it
doesn't allow you to do that.
