Screen resolution question

Because my vision is so bad, I have my WinXP system set to display in
800x600 resolution. It works nicely for all my software.

However, when I list "All Programs" from the Start menu, the program list
fills the screen and I can't get beyond the last entry on the screen -- I
know there are more programs on the list.

When I switch the resolution to a higher setting, I do get all the
programs, but I can't read the names!

Does anyone know how to scroll past the last program on the All Programs
listing when in low res?

There are two things to do:

1. Make sure you aren't using the "Personalized" feature of the Start
Menu. Right-click on the Start button and then left-click on
Properties. On the Start Menu tab, Advanced, you'll see a lot of
options. I believe the last item is Personalized Menus - uncheck it,
Apply and OK out.

2. Organize your Start Menu as if it were a filing cabinet. You can make
folders for general topics and put the shortcuts to those programs in
there. Right-click on the Start Button and choose "Explore". Now you'll
get the two-paned view of your Start Menu. You can create new folders
and right-click/drag/move shortcuts into the new folders. For instance,
you might want to create a folder called "Graphics" and put all those
type of programs in there, one called "Office", etc.

Use Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.

If using the XP style start menu, mark "scroll programs" to put names in a
single column. If too long to fit on the screen there will be scroll arrows
at the top and bottom of the column to navigate.

If using the classic menu style, you can enable scroll programs as above.
You also have a different option, "personalized menus." The columns will
display only shortcuts that you have used. If you want to see all items,
click the chevron to reveal the long list.

Using Windows Explorer to access the start menu folders
..\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
and
..\Documents and Settings\<your account>\Start Menu

You can rearrange folders and shortcuts to your liking. Suggest keeping
these folders : Programs, Accessories and Startup and organizing around
them.

To control width of columns, rename start menu items with shorter names.
Example: Change Microsoft Office Professional 2003 to MSOffice

To control the length of columns, group similar items together. Example,
place all game shortcuts in to a Games folder. All internet tools into an
Online folder.

The "personalized menus" option only appears if you're using the "Classic
Start Menu" option. I switched to it, unchecked the "Personalized" box,
but the problem persists.
