screen goes blank!

I've done an install of xp pro. Initially the comp. had win2000 but I'm
fairly certain I followed the instructions to erase and set up a new
partition for the install. I had xp running but couldn't get any video size
larger than the 640 X ?. Can't remember exactly what the other number was!
At that point somewhere, somehow I changed a setting
in the display properties. I think I unchecked the box in display
properties that
says - use this devise as the primary monitor - thus after the initial start
up screen where it shows windows starting up, and should then go to your
desktop I get a blank screen. I've tried to f8 and get to safe mode but I
first see a screen that
says keyboard error then when I select safe mode all that I get is a full
page of text somewhat similar to dos but with no prompt at the end of the
string. From this point I can't exit normally. I have to manually shut
down the comp.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Jim

If I could get to a screen that would allow this I'd try it. Initially I
could see the monitor but only in the 640 X 480 configuration. It's when I
started try to change the settings in the display mode that everything
started to foul up.

I just reread your post, you already tried safe mode.
so you seem to remember that you unchecked use this device as your primary
monitor, I wonder if you have the ability for two monitors, and see if the
2nd port would allow you to view your system?

someone else might have a better suggestion, but for now, mine is to perform
a repair install. you will have to reinstall all the service packs and
patches.
