Scheduled scan doesn't run and error 0x800700002

I have a couple of problems with Defender. I previously used the Micrososft
Anti-Spyware program with no difficulties and now have problems with upgrade
to defender.
1) I have scans scheduled and computer is on at time of run, but no scan runs
2) If I try to manually start scan from page where it says I have not
scanned my computer, I get "Windows Defender encountered an error:
0x80070002. The system cannot find the file specified." If I go to the scan
drop down menu and select a scan, the scan runs with no problems.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to fix these difficulties?

Thanks.

I'd ignore #2--I believe this is a known issue, and it should get corrected
in an update at some point.

On #1, if you go to control panel, maintenance and performance, and open
scheduled tasks--is the task scheduler disabled?

Windows Defender uses the Windows scheduled tasks facility to schedule the
scans. If this is disabled, I don't think you'll get scheduled scans.

It doesn't appear to be disabled and I added Defender to its list of task as
it did not show up there. However, I have never changed the settings on that
and the previewous Anti-spyware ran just fine.

Unfortunatly Windows defender isn't an improved version of the previous
antispyware, and better thought of as a different product, compare them yes,
but don't expect them to fonction similar !

Have you checked that your Schedule tasks is fonctioning ?
The previous version and didn't use the schedule tasks, it fonctioned alone !
The fact that schedule tasks window appears doesn't mean is working !

First check that your scan shows in shedule tasks if not go to
advanced section,it is a hidden task !
Check the properties of the scheduler in the " general and connection
section",
are enabled for the scheduler to function.

If like me you had never used schedule tasks its also possable you had
diasabled

Thanks- that's a much better description of what is really needed than I
gave.

If you go to Advanced, and the scheduler is active, the top item should read
"Stop using the task scheduler."

If it is not active, I believe it reads "Start using the task scheduler."

OK here what's happening to me.

I selected Defender in the task scheduler and after setting the time it ask
me for a password. After entering a password and confirming it, it tells me
access denied-I don't have authority. BTW-I don't use a password on my
laptop.

What am I doing wrong?

Unfortunately, it still gives the "access denied, you're not authorized"
message.

Hmm - I'm not sure how this works--you may have hit on something here:

My understanding is that scheduled tasks require a password on the account
used to schedule them.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/agent_plus_at.mspx

By default, the tasks are run as "system."

In "advanced" you can set that AT Service account. If you change that from
the default, (system account)--the account must have a password.

One way to handle this would be to create another adminstrator account with
a password to use for this purpose, but I would have expected, in your
situation, that the default of system account would work.

If you go to advanced, and show hidden tasks, what account is shown for the
MP Scheduled Scan job?

Bill,

Thanks for your interest. Here's what I did:
"Control Panel"
"Scheduled Task"
"Windows Defender"
"Properties"
"Schedule" tab
"Advance" the only thing appearing in the very top field is March 9, 9 pm
which I set to mirror the scheduled time in the Defender App settiing.
Obviously, I tried this yesterday with yesterday's days.
Any help would be appreciated
Tks

It's Windows XP SP2

BTW in my last post I should have said that after clicking "Advance the only
thing appearing in the very top field is March 9, 2006" and not "March 9, 9
pm"

TIA for any help

Bill or anyone,

Any other suggestion for me. As a review:'
When attemting to set the time in Task Scheduler through the Control Panel
under the advance tab it tells me that access is denied and I don't have
rights .....
I don't use a password and I am the only one that uses my laptop.
I am using Windows XP SP2

TIA

On the task tab of properties of the Defender scan job--what is shown in the
"Run as:" box near the bottom of the page.

It should say NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM I believe.

I've got to say that you've lost me here--You go to the scheduled tasks
folder, and you click on advanced--and what do you see? I see a list headed
by "stop using task scheduler" and ending in "show hidden tasks" which I
have checked, so that I can see and perhaps modify the Windows Defender task
"MP Scheduled Scan.

Bill, I have nothing like that in the "Advanced Schedule Options

It has a Stat Date
a box for and End Date
A box for Preeat Tast
etc

But it may have something to do with my previous post. Let me kinow if you
think I need to change TONYLAPTOP language you suggested.
TIA

We're talking two different locations here. Close the dialogs associated
with the individual jobs and get back to the scheduled tasks folder--now
check the Advanced menu choice at the top of that folder.

And Tony is your username? I think this is the source of the problem. You
can fix this in one of two ways, I think. Either you need an administrator
user account with a password which you can put in there (I believe that the
password is a requirement--I hope I'm not making that up)--or you need to
set that back to the system account--which perhaps is as simple as making it
read the same way mine does??

This isn't easy info to dig up. I find confirmation of my idea that a
password is required, but not with a Microsoft source.

Try several things--and you can sit there in the scheduled tasks folder to
test them--just right click the job and hit run.

Try the current settings in the run as: box, but substitute administrator
for Tony. I suspect this won't work. Am I correct in guessing that this is
an XP Home version?

If that fails, try making it read NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

It is quite possible that this only works if the creator--maximize the
window so you can see that column--is SYSTEM--as it should be if this is the
job scheduled by Windows Defender.

A third possibility is to create another user on the machine, and
administrator, with a password, which you can use to schedule such jobs.
However, that should not be necessary and will complicate your startup--I
suspect you just boot directly to the desktop at this point--no user screens
or passwords, right?
