Scandisk-unknown error

D

Dan C

When I start my computer, scandisk comes up, does it's thing, then reports "
an unspecified error occurred". then scandisk closes and windows comes up.
How do I stop or fix the unspecified error? It is trying to fix orphanded
files and such. I am running winxp pro SP2. Thanks

Hi,

First try running chkdsk c: /r from the Recovery Console.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307654

If that fails, then download and run a drive diagnostic utility from the web
site of the system or drive manufacturer.

:

There is no scan disk in XP - tt's called chkdsk. To see all the
settings and how to run it go to Start | Help and Support. Type chkdsk
in the search box. Click on the Chkdsk Overview entry.

Here is another detailed article on what chkdsk does but not all the
switches are discussed.

An explanation of the new /C and /I Switches that are available to use
with Chkdsk.exe

wouldn't it be easier to go to my computer right click on the c drive click
properties and click check now under error checking

Hi,

Because it should be initiated and run from outside Windows to help clear
it.

Another option would be to start/run cmd, then run chkntfs /d from the
prompt to clear the dirty bit that is causing it to try and run at boot up.
