saving website pictures to disk

many people (I'm sure) have been on a website and right clicked a picture and chose "save picture as"? Well normally, the save window comes up with the filename already listed at whatever the website assigned name is such as "pic1" with the filetype usually "jpg".

For some unknown reason, my system just started defaulting to saving everything as filename "untitled" and filetype "bmp". Whereas I can change the filename from "untitled" to whatever I want, I cannot change the filetype to anything other than "bmp". What made it do this and how do I get it to stop? I've gone into "internet options" in the "tools" menu on internet explorer, but can't find anything that seems to correct it? I've tried resetting "internet options" to "default". I've (of course) rebooted a few times, nothing seems to affect it.

Thanks for any help - Jim W.

On the General tab of Internet Options, under Temporary Internet Files click
Delete Files.

I just happened to be in the "advanced" tab in "internet options" of the "tools" menu. Since I have the "empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed" option checked, why wouldn't these files be auto deleted?

This happens if the indexes of the Temporary Internet Files get
overloaded. In Control Panel - Internet Options, in the temporary
Internet files section on the General page, click 'Delete files'. Then
I suggest click Settings and reduce the space allowed - 50 MB is
probably generous, and on big drives it tends to choose by default a
setting that is so high that this overload happens
