Saving images off the net

For some reason, whenever I want to save a particular JPG or GIF image that
I find on the internet, it doesn't quite work as expected.

Example:

I find an image I want to copy onto my hardrive. I right click on and select
"Save Picture As..."

It takes me to the My Pictures folder and, under filename, it always has the
default "untitled" -and- in the "Save as type..." window it only gives one
option: Bitmap (*.bmp).

I find this rather surprising and annoying because, a majority of the time
the file type is JPG and GIF.

There's got to be an easier way.

If the file type is GIF, and I name the file by including the GIF extender,
the file format is incorrect. I think it is still saving it as bitmap file.
In other words, it is *not* saving it as a valid GIF file.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Clear the Temporary Internet Files. In IE>Tools>Internet Options>
Delete Files button. And check the box to Delete Offline content.
