Saving documents in Word 2000

I can no longer save a document in Word 2000 - I don't even get the "Save
As" dialogue window when I try to save or when closing a document. My PC is
configured for 2 users and Word for the other user works fine. I have tried
re-installing Office 2000 but no help. Any ideas? No viruses detected and
makes no difference if Norton is on or off.

Hi Pat

could you please confirm that if you open up a blank document (new one) and
type something and then close it, it just closes without asking you if you
want to save?

the only thing that i can think of that would cause this is that the product
is not activated correctly, or that when it was purchased it was purchased
on the subscription method (did that come out with ver 2000?) ...
are either of these a possibility?

Cheers

Word 2000 did not require activation. That started with Word 2002.

Hi Charles

My Word 2000 DID require activation ... (well, my Office 2000 did) .. i'm in
Australia - not sure if that makes any difference.

A senior moment? I don't recall mine needing it, certainly not on the level
that Word 2003 does.

There was a bug in Word 2000 that when you updated a Windows 2000 service
pack it started asking you if you wanted to activate / register your product.
Microsoft published a patch for this on the download website.

No, I believe activation was tested in international (non-domestic) copies
of Office 2000--or at least in Asia and Australia.

Hi Suzanne,

yes, i checked out the piracy page at ms and there's an article there about
the "trial of office 2000 activation" .. so i guess we were the guinea pigs
:)

It happened in the UK too - some users on Win2K OS were prompted on 15 April
last year (I think) to register Office 2000. It was fixed by a patch to
Windows 2000 and a security update to Office 2000. We had to implement it in
the firm I worked in at the time, because some of the users were affected by
it and not others.
