"Save picture as" only provides .bmp choice

T

Tom

Why when I do a R-click and save picture as, it only
allows me to save as a .bmp file and not a jpg or gif,
when I know the images are that of the same?

Ramesh [MVP]

Tom,

This problem occurs if the Temporary Internet Files are full.
1. Start Internet Explorer
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the General tab.
4. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
5. When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.

If this did not help, see IEFAQ:

Ramesh,
I tried ALL the suggestions on your excellent FAQ page,
and I still have the same problem as Tom: IE 6 wants to
download every image as a bmp file. It started doing this
after I downloaded the last patch to IE. Outlook Express
is doing the same thing. And at the same time as that, IE
stopped downloading files. When I try to download a file,
I get a pop-up message: "Internet Explorer cannot download
[filename] from . Internet Explorer was not able to
open this Internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."
EVERY download I've tried gives this same message, over a
wide range of sites. I can't believe they're all
unavailable. Do I need to download IE again, or should I
just switch to Netscape?

Lew,

For the bmp issue, two other things which you can try:
1. IE/Internet Options/Delete Files. Also in Settings change the amount to 40 MB. This will help in preventing the index files from becoming overloaded.

2. If that doesn't help check your settings here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
For Content Type, it should read "image/jpeg".

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg
For content Type, it should read: image/jpeg

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
For Content Type is should read "image/gif"

If it already set to that, go to Start, Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll, regsvr32 /i shdoc401.dll,regsvr32 webvw.dll and regsvr32 thumbvw.dll (for upgrades). and "regsvr32 /i mshtml"

Thanks, Ramesh: quick response as always. I'll try the suggestions this

Lew,

Not really sure what is causing the download problem. Please see the tip from MVP Mike Burgess [same thread]. This might help for this problem as well. And can you tell me the hotfix number you downloaded latest?

Mike's tip did the trick on both problems. (Thanks, Mike!) I ran KB824145 on
January 7, ran KB828750 the day before. Not sure if the problem started
after the first or second fix. Thanks for your help.
