Save file location

Was wondering how to change the default save file location when Downloading
from the internet. Everytime I click to download something it wants to save
it to the temp folder. I would like to change this location. Thanks for your
time

Great information! Do you also know how I can change the "File\Save as..."
location for IE to another directory than "My Documents?" Thanks.

Jon Kennedy

IE should remember the last directory/folder used when saving something.
That setting is saved in the registry here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Save Directory

If you want to expand the functionality of File...Save or SaveAs, you might

Hi there,
I actually found the link below while searching for info. on this. However,
my problem is that when I go to the current user\software\microsoft\internet
explorer and hilite internet explorer, I don't see "Type", only "Name" and
"Data." I tried entering a key called Download Directory unde Name and
entering the path under Data, but it didn't work. I'm using Windows 98SE. Any
help will be much welcomed and appreciated!

You are not meant to see "Type" in Win98.
Don't add a key. The instructions did not say that.

"If the entry is not found, create a new String Value named Download
Directory and set the data accordingly. Quit Registry Editor and
Restart Windows"

Thank you for the response. As you can tell, I basically don't know what I'm
doing when in the registry. I can enter a new string value and call it
Dowload Directory but how do I enter the path. I tried putting the correct
path in the Data column, but that didn't work. I also don't know what the
[called as REG_SZ] is about. Thanks for your patience. Paul.

A

Alan Edwards

Once you create the string value called Download Directory, (it will
appear under Name), you enter the path by either double clicking that
string or right-clicking it and selecting Modify. The data will go in
the Data column if you do that.

Ignore the reference to REG_SZ. That is not for Win98 and that is why
I removed it from the quoted instructions in my last response.

If in any doubt, supply the exact path and I can show you another
method of creating the data.

Looks like I had it right the first time but didn't include the quotes. OK,
so I got the Download Directory there and it's value ("c:\..."), but IE is
still defaulting to My Pictures. Is my Download Directory in the correct
spot, i.e. I just click on Internet Explorer and added it there (and not in a
sub-directory). There is a sub-directory under Internet Explorer called
Download...should it perhaps go there?

The Download Directory is for general downloads you click on. I
suspect if you are getting My Pictures, then you are talking about
something different. Are you talking about using "Save Picture As.."
instead? That will default to My Pictures.

No, Download Directory should not go anywhere else.
The article you read is correct. It should be exactly where it says.
It must not be in a sub-key or it will be ignored.(They are not
directories in the Registry, but keys and sub-keys and values)
I am surprised you did not have it there in the first place.
It shows in every computer I have, no matter if XP, Win98 or Win ME.

What happens if you download a .zip file?
Is the prompt you get showing your preferred download directory?

OK. That has no connection with Download Directory.

If you want the location of My Pictures to be different than standard,
then you can change it in the Registry.

Start-Run-Regedit
Navigate down to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
Alter the data against "My Pictures" to the folder you want.

Do the same (if the value is there) in

Unless there is a similar value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and the value
you entered in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders for My Pictures was a valid folder, then I cannot see why it
would revert. Check the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders just in case, though it does not normally have My Pictures in
it.

In Win98 SE, I have the value showing beside My Pictures as
C:\Graphics. I added it to both the keys (for some forgotten reason).
I have never had a problem.
If I use "Save Picture As" then the folder I get prompted with is
C:\Graphics.

Can you export the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders after you make an alteration and show it here (or email me) so
at least the formatting can be checked?

Hi there,

It seems IE is changing the setting every time it's opened. The
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE does not have the My Pictures in it. Here is a copy of the
requested key:

Can you export the

OK, changed the data against "My Pictures" in the registry, shut down, tried
to save a pic, defaulted to "My Pictures". Checked entry in registry, it was
back to "My Pictures." Changed it again, exited registry, went back in to
check, my change was still there, shut down, re-started, checked registry
entry, my change still there, went to save a picture in IE, defaulted to "My
Pictures".

There was no My Pictures in the second key you mentioned.

Yes, I was referring to 'save picture as'. I rarely download anything so if I
ever have to , I don't mind telling the document / files where to be saved.

:

Looks like I had it right the first time but didn't include the quotes. OK,
so I got the Download Directory there and it's value ("c:\..."), but IE is
still defaulting to My Pictures. Is my Download Directory in the correct
spot, i.e. I just click on Internet Explorer and added it there (and not in a
sub-directory). There is a sub-directory under Internet Explorer called
Download...should it perhaps go there?

Paul.

:

Once you create the string value called Download Directory, (it will
appear under Name), you enter the path by either double clicking that
string or right-clicking it and selecting Modify. The data will go in
the Data column if you do that.

Ignore the reference to REG_SZ. That is not for Win98 and that is why
I removed it from the quoted instructions in my last response.

If in any doubt, supply the exact path and I can show you another
method of creating the data.

Paul.

You are not meant to see "Type" in Win98.
Don't add a key. The instructions did not say that.

What about User Shell Folders?
Is there an entry there?
If not, try putting one there to match the one in Shell Folders.

Is c:\wp51\paul\pics a valid folder?

Yes, Regedit formats the export with \\ to replace \ in folder names

In my experience, you must akways change the corresponding entries in both
Shell Folders and User Shell Folders in order to make the change stick.
They will typically have the same content except that the entries in User
Shell Folders use the %username% variable in the paths while the Shell
Folders entries contain the actual username, such as "paul".
