SATA HDD displayed under "Safely Remove Hardware"

After the installation of SP2, I have had a few different errors with my
Maxtor 160GB SATA HDD. The computer frequently BSODs and reports a
BAD_POOL_HEADER and now my SATA is showing up under the "Safely Remove
Hardware" icon in the taskbar.

I am having the exact same issue, only I have a Western Digital SATA HD and
an ASUS motherboard. Anyone know the cause? Help would be greatly appreciated!
