SATA DVD burner not working in Windows XP

I just bought a SATA DVD burner (Samsung SH-S203N) from newegg.com and I
am having some problems with it. When I open the tray it comes out and
then automatically goes back in without me doing anything and before I
can put a CD/DVD in the tray or take a CD/DVD out of it. This is most
annoying. I have a dual boot machine with Linux on it and this does not
happen in Linux. So, I am assuming that there is some setting in
Windows that maybe I should be able to change to fix this. Anyone know
how to fix this?

XP does not have built-in support for SATA. Usually you need to install
special drivers to get XP to handle SATA. These drivers come from the
motherboard (or PC) maker. Note that a PC can have more than one flavor of
SATA controller, so even if your internal hard drive is SATA, and XP works
with that, it might still need new/different drivers for the contoller to
which you have attached the DVD burner.

You might try the DVD burner's support website for advice. If this is a
general XP-related problem, they probably know about it, and also how to fix
it.

That is not the problem as it can read from the drive and my motherboard
came with Sata drivers. In any case, I fixed the problem, it was a bios
setting. The Gigabyte motherboard I have has two Sata controllers and
both have IDE settings. The one I was using you actually have to
disable Sata to use IDE settings which is the default in the disable
mode. After doing that it is working fine though now it won't work in
linux and I will have to figure that one out also.

It should not work this way. If the DVD drive works with SATA in
Linux, then this usually means that the SATA controlller is native
to the motherboard. Disabling SATA and enabling IDE usually means
an issue with Windows XP. It might be worthwhie to check for (a) a
bios update and/or (b) new SATA driver files for Windows.

I just had the same problem with a Samsung SH-S203N SATA DVD. The drive works
under Linux but not XP. At the advice of Samsung I re-installed XP Pro from
my slipstreamed SP-2 disk. The drive worked fine UNTIL I used Windows update
and installed 105 updates. Now the DVD won't work again. Does anyone know
which "update" is causing the problem? I guess I'll start again and install
each of the 105 seperately until I find the culprit. On my DVD, the computer
re-boots when i insert any audio CD. Data CD's just are unreadable.
