Safely Removing Font Files

I'm using Windows XP 2. Each time I open 'Microsoft Works' I get the
warning that I have over 500 fonts and that my screen might not display
correctly. Actually the display is okay, so far, I'd just like to get rid of
the warning message. This message came after I did a re-install from a CD of
a genealogy programme I have, called “Ultimate Family Tree.†I assume the
re-install added additional fonts. Obviously I don't want to delete fonts
that will disrupt any current programmes. Can anyone propose a safe method
of selecting, that is the harmless fonts, to delete that wont effect other
programmes? By the way I note the icon for some fonts is TT (True Type) and
other are "O" I'm not sure of the difference.

See "TrueType Fonts Shipped with Microsoft Applications"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=123084) and "How to Determine the
Default Windows Fonts" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=254768).
You could move the fonts from the FONTS folder to a new folder TEST
and leave them there for a while. So you will have them at the hand if
you find out that an important font is missing.
