Fonts visible in programs but not useable

My fonts folder is showing several TT fonts installed but these fonts are not
accessible within programs, specifically MS Publisher. I should clarify this
by saying that the fonts actually appear in the drop-down list of fonts to
choose from within Publisher as if they are there. But when selected nothing
happens, i.e. the font reverts back to the last font selected.

Additionally, I cannot access the Properties for the fonts folder to see if
there is anything amiss. The option is greyed out.

I have done the command line stuff to re-set the attribute, no luck. One
post suggested running fontreg, however XP returned an error message.
Perhaps this was not applicable to XP. Have also tried install font on those
that are supposedly "there" and receive a prompt that the font is already
installed, remove old and reinstall.

Anyone have some ideas on this?

Thanks for the suggestion. I ran Repair Fonts from TWEAK UI, but the fonts
are still not operating when selected from within a program. I also retried
running ATTRIB +S C:\WINDOWS\FONTS though I don't think this was necessary as
I could access the Install Font area already. Other thoughts?

What application(s) is this happening in?
Have you selected the text, prior to trying to change the Font?

It's happening in MS Publisher specifically. Seems to be working fine in MS
Word. Text is selected prior.

Additionally, I've just downloaded and unzipped some new fonts but they are
not being found in the folder where they are located when trying to install
them from the Control Panel.

What font are you trying ... does it happen on all fonts?

What version of Publisher ... I have XP ... I can try here on mine and see
what happens.

2002. Not happening with all fonts, just some that did not come standard.
Eg Gautami.
