Safely eject USB drive under program control

All,

I receive data from the field on USB thumbdrives for importing and
processing in an Access 2003 application. The one issue that I cannot seem
to solve is after importing the data from the thumbdrive I have two options:
simply pull the drive out; or use the tray utility to "Safely Remove
Hardware". Why this is a problem is after processing 20+ thumbdrives and not
using the tray utility the application hangs and restarting the appliction
doesn't help. Rebooting works. The user complains that using the tray
utility takes "too long" and disrupts workflow.

So, my question is: Is there a way under program control to emulate the
use of the tray utility?

During each data processing session, more that a 120 thumbdrives are
processed.

Thanks for any help!!!
