Safe mode question

Is there a way to get a list of what *doesn't* load in safe mode in detail?
I'm having a problem with slow networking that works fine in safemode but
takes 30 seconds to open a folder in normal mode. Disabled all startup
programs and problem still there. If I can find what is NOT loaded during
Safe Mode w/networking, I can manually add them back one at a time until I
find what's causing the problem.

Thanx,

Vic

Vic - More info would be help. Evidently you are electing "Safe Mode with
Networking" since network connections are not viable with "Normal Safe
Mode".

Regarding "...slow networking that works fine in safemode but takes 30
seconds to open a folder in normal mode...." - is it a local folder or one
availavble via the network? Isa it a particular folder or any folder? Does
network function ok otherwise e.g. connecting, computers and/or shared
files/printer?

That's just it - nothing is failing but *something* is interfering with the
network - not a virus or spyware.

Tried turning them off but I'm going to try uninstalling and see if that
helps. Using AVG free but I've used it for years w/o trouble.

Have you tried turning off all virus programs?

Sorry, you're right - should have given more info.

Have 3 systems - 2 running xp pro and a new system running xppro/vista dual
boot. The problem does NOT happen in Vista.

The 2 original systems were connected in a LAN workgroup thorough a 2-Wire
gateway. They worked fine. I added the third system. Now when I try to
access a network share the folder opens displaying the contents, then blanks
and there is furious network activity for 30 - 45 seconds before the folder
displays again. After that, all access is perfectly normal unless I let it
sit idle for a while. Then it goes through the same stuff.

It's not hardware because I've changed the mobo. Clean boot has no effect -
only thing that works is safemode w/network.

That's why I want to know how to find out what is NOT loading during safe
mode. If I can find that out, I can remove them from the loading process in
normal mode and add them back one by one until I find the culprit.

My guess is that it's the AVG anti virus - that's the only thing that's
common between the systems and it's set for auto updates. However that
doesn't explain why everything works in Vista!

thanx,

Vic

there is no rule to
suggest what services
should not be loaded
or should be loaded,
because your system
is different from everyone
elses.

the only time that services
are basically similar among
all systems is "safemode".

So if you really feel that your
problem is service related,
then you need to boot into
safemode and make a listing
of what services are enabled.

then by using that listing
you can boot into normal
mode and enable/disable
those services to match
your list.

Tracked it down - sorta :)

Seems like AVG Resident Shield wants to treat a network share as a threat
and scan every file and folder when it's first opened. Disabled that and
everything works as expected.

I say 'sorta' because AVG has been around awhile and if it had this behavior
for everyone there would be lots of posts about it. My guess is that AVG
Resident Shield is conflicting with something else - possible the network
driver. Don't know and at this point, I really don't care.

it's been a good night!

Thanx!
