Running DOS App in XP

I am having an issue running a certain DOS app in XP. I know some DOS apps
will never work with XP, but I wondered if anyone got this one to work: Might
and Magic - World of Xeen. When I load the app, all I get is a black screen
with a blinking cursor, but the program does not load. I have tried the
following:

1. Changing XP to VGA mode and re-booting.
2. Changed all the memory (including extended) to Auto.
3. Ran in compatibility mode for Windows 95.
4. Ran with VDMSound.

If there is anything else I could try, please let me know. If not, what is
the easiest and least expensive way to set up my system so I can play it? Do
I have to set up a dual operating system, or is there an easier way?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

In considering the need for progress and bettering the PC environment certain
casualties occur.

Norton's eralier applications became incompatible, many CD writing
applications became incompatible and your Might and Magic now joins the list.

For one to be able to enjoy the benefits of the future and still pleasures
of the past, the dual boot system becomes more and more a necessity.

It would appear that there is not easier alternative than to establish a
basic dual boot system.

If Might and Magic is a basic DOS application, find an old version of DOS,
don't waste time and space with Win98, say around DOS 6 and use this as the
small partition containing Might and Magic.

Hi Nick,

A DOS application that uses direct hardware access in the program code will
not function in an NT environment, as that sort of control is not allowed.
As a workaround, a dual boot is feasible, but you might try a Virtual
Machine instead. This creates an artificial machine environment for whatever
operating system you choose (I've run DOS, various Win iterations, half a
dozen versions of Linux), and you can run the program from there. You will
need to locate a copy of DOS (not hard to find on google) and install it the
old-fashioned way once you get the Virtual Machine installed and running.

There are several available for use, I use Microsoft's (originally known as
Connectix):
