Running a Personal Web Server

D

Dale F.

FrontPage 97 included a "Personal Web Server" on the
installation CD. I don't believe FrontPage 2003 has
anything similar.

If I wanted to set up my PC as a very simple web server,
what would be the easiest way to do this?

I don't think the Personal Web Server from the FrontPage
97 CD will work with Windows XP. In fact I believe I
tried it and this was my reason for purchasing FrontPage
2003.

Thank you,

Dale F.

You no longer need PWS, you will find IIS as part of the
installation of XP on your harddrive or on the CD.

Go to add/remove programs > add/remove windows components
Internet Information Services (IIS)

Note: Unless you want to use features that must run on a
server FP2003 works great from and folder now.

Good luck

Users that need Web server functionality in a desktop
operating system should use Windows XP Professional. <<

I see. But I have XP Home Edition on my PC, not XP
Professional. And I am very wary, from experience, of
attempting to upgrade an operating system on a PC. What
are my options, if any?

Thank you,

Dale F.

You can download and install the apache web server free, which will work on
Win XP Home. However, it will *not* support the FP server extensions.

You can download and install the apache web server
free.. <<

This sounds like an excellent solution. I don't need the
FP server extensions.

But from my web search, it seems rather difficult
(counter-intuitive) to download and install the apache
web server. Is there a site out there that makes this
easier or that provides simple instructions?

Thanks,

Dale F.

Dale:

If you want to support ASP development, Apache is not going to help you. In
this case your only option would be to upgrade your OS.

Why not follow some good advice for a change?

Google: "xp home"+"web server" and you can read all kinds of
articles to help you understand your options and how to implement
what you decided to do.

The only advice you got here so far that has come even remotely
useful was the advice to upgrade to XP Pro which is *NOT* a
requirement but does allow for easier installation and configurations
and does provide more useability for web related page development
and local hosting.

You do need to have the extensions, if you want to open the site in FP via http.

By the way - I think this is the worst advice of the bunch, but that's just
me. All of those recommendations have you hacking into your Registry and
altering Windows in ways that will have an unknown future impact.

I would never recommend that someone do these....

Would you look up the word 'choice' in the dictionary Murray?
It would also be refreshing for a change if knowledgeable
people stopped insulting the intelligence of others asking for help.
Thos people asking for help may be ignorant and bereft of knowledge
but that does not neccessarily mean they are stupid and want to stay
that way.

Would you know if Cassini requires a registry hack? It would likely
provide another alternative.

Have you tried Cassini? I think it's just for asp.net stuff, and localhost only since there's no security. I haven't p layed with it...just curious.

you need Windows 2K running the Internet Information Service (IIS) or Windows XP
Pro or Windows 2003 Server.

They all have IIS included (but not installed by default).
