run rules now versus when message arrives

I created some rules that aren't working when the messages arrive. I can run
them automatically but this option is not ideal. Any ideas about why the
rules would only work when manually selected? I'm using Outlook 2003.
thanks guys.

Post the exact definition of one of the rules that doesn't work and an
example of a message you believe should be triggering it.

with some further research, i have discovered it may be because it is an
additional mailbox? but i'm confused as to why they work when manually run
and not automatically upon receipt.
for example:
my second mailbox - inbox receives messages from only source. if i create a
rule that says, when receiving messages from <Company>, play a sound and
display a desktop notification, it doesn't unless i go in and select "run
rules now"
is there a way to accomplish this in outlook 2003? and if you can't do it
thorugh rules, can it be done any way? at all?
thanks for your help,
marie

I believe rules run automatically on your default mailbox only. I don't
know of any way to change that.
