RPC shutdown & blaster worm?

P

Pete

Hi,
My laptop suffers from a system shutdown on a regular
basis due to "Remote Procedure Call being terminated
unexpectedly..." and I get the impression from reading
various threads and topics that this is due to
the 'blaster' worm.
The trouble is that the shutdown message appears everytime
I try and access download sites and login info, hence I
can't download the necessary update or patch from
Microsoft - or anywhere in fact - to fix the problem.
Could the message be appearing due to another reason or is
the worm the most likely cause, and if so, how do I solve
the problem?
Many thanks if anyone can help me out with this one.
Pete

Before you connect to the internet, go to Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC
Locate the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service, and double click it. On the
recovery tab, set the recovery options to Restart the Service, instead of
the computer.

Then see www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm#rpc for a small download that
will clean the worm, and offer the opportunity to download the appropriate
patch from Microsoft. Then go back to Services and reset the Recovery
properties to restart the computer.

Try selecting CTRL-ALT-DELETE together to bring up Task
Manager. Look for msblast.exe, select it and End Process.
This should stop your computer shutting down. Enable your
firewall. If your computer still shuts down try this.. Go
to RUN and type cmd & shutdown -a
The Blaster parch No. is kb823890
